It can be translated into English in several different ways depending on the context, but 'corny', 'creepy', and 'disgusting' are all common possibilities.

September 9, 2009 at 11:13 PMStrictly speaking I would say that the 'zhi' sound in Mandarin Chinese and the 'j' sound in the word quoted are not exactly the same.
That English 'j' is a harder sound, the Mandarin 'zhi' somewhat softer.
Picture it as the difference between a gratuitous insult and my foot kicking the ass of the previous poster.

The character "han" in 汉字 (Hànzì) is not the character "han" in hanshui meaning sweat 汗水 (hànshuǐ).
汉 is a character which represents Chinese ethnicity. It comes from the Han ethnic group (汉族) who form the majority of the population in China.
Notice that the Chinese language may also be called 汉语 (hànyǔ).

We'd call a plastic bag 袋子, but we'd also call similar types of bag 袋子, whether they're made from cloth or paper.

I think Bruce Lee's real name was 李小龙 Lǐ Xiǎolóng. As you'll know in China the surname always comes first. The 龙 means 'dragon'.
