June 24, 2009 at 3:40 AMBe optimistic, Lao Wang can still make it. Maybe he'll become a triad big boss one day.
Quote from a previous episode:
留得青山在,不怕没柴烧

June 14, 2009 at 8:40 PMI like the Lesson Sets idea, especially the Sets tab where one can browse the episodes in the sets. However, I find that automatically adding all the lessons in the Sets to my lessons when I click on a Set in the Me page a bit unexpected, because I expected to be able to see the lesson names before adding them.

June 12, 2009 at 10:17 AMI guess loss of privacy is the price of being a celebrity.
I too miss Dear Amber. Wishing her all the best in the future.

A couple of hours ago, the site was very sluggish (at least on my end). I think this was screwing up my text edits, and I had to reedit several times. Everything is fine now though.
Thanks for the explanation about names.

June 12, 2009 at 2:40 AMBack to the main theme of this lesson, what is the point then of telling people your surname anyway, if younger people call you 叔叔/阿姨, and older/same age people call you by your given name.
It looks like surname is only used in the form of X 先生/经理/etc in a business or professional setting.
And I prefer not to refer to someone as 爷爷 or 奶奶, because they might think I think they're old.
Note: Why is the CPOD text editing a bit screwy today?

June 12, 2009 at 1:34 AMI have a question about addressing someone older than me. I'm meeting up with an older couple when I visit Shanghai soon, and would like to know how to properly greet them. If the man's surname is X, do I simply call him X 先生, and his wife X 太太? Thanks.
Note: These people are NOT related to me. They are actually my wife's brother's fiancee's parents (that's 4 degrees of separation), so I just treat them as friends.

June 11, 2009 at 1:51 AMHere's what I'm wondering... at 13:35 in the podcast, you can hear a squiking sound in the background. Is it a parrot, closing door or someone screaming?

June 9, 2009 at 8:44 PMI use "Smart Common Input Method" (SCIM) with 智能拼音 on my Mandriva Linux machine. I find it very difficult to set up right, but once its set up, it very easy to use. I would say easier than switching the input language on a Mac.
Too bad Google Pinyin is not yet available on Linux (even though 20% of users wanted it according to Wikipedia). I would like to test it, but I don't use Windows.
Posted on: Introduction to Pinyin
June 25, 2009 at 2:12 AMHow can Pinyin make it easier for Chinese people to learn Chinese when it requires people to learn another character set, in addition to Chinese characters? I have older relatives who read/write Chinese, but do not know Pinyin. What system was used to teach pronunciation prior to Pinyin?
I used to think that Pinyin was invented to make it easy and quick to type Chinese characters in computer / text messages using standard ASCII keyboards.
