As for the pronunciation guide, Linux users like me feel left out. :(

February 25, 2009 at 9:59 AMCould be my hearing, but I think I heard the speaker pronounced 梦 as "mung".
Would the following also be categorized as 广告?
- Job ads (looking for employees)
- Selling items ads (e.g. on Ebay)
Thanks.

February 18, 2009 at 4:30 AMDo babies really take 10 months to come out in China?
When are we going to find out if the baby (in this series) is boy or girl?

February 1, 2009 at 11:19 AMkesirui, I agree. Lets keep ChinesePod discussions about Chinese language/culture only, and not a place for people to espouse their religious beliefs.

January 30, 2009 at 5:24 AMWe all know that kids get 红包. However when it comes to adults, things get murkier. Do adults get them as long as they are not married? Or until they start working? Or not at all, i.e. only for real kids? Should people who are already working/married give 红包 to their elderly parents or grandparents? I used to have a certain understanding of these rules, however lately I've met people with different practices.
Is there a place (online) where I can refer to the definite rules on who should give or get 红包?
Thanks.

January 27, 2009 at 10:46 AMRegarding the origin of 船, just look here
http://chinese-characters.org/meaning/8/8239.html
Its got nothing to do with any ancient flood. The left-side is a combination of a pictogram of boat made from curved planks. You can see the archaic form in the Web site. The right side is supposed to mean the mouth of a river.
Geologists say that the flood story in the Old testament originated from a localized flooding of the Black Sea many thousands of years ago. This event was recorded by the people in the region and over time transformed into folklore. Even if there were some contact between Chinese and Middle Eastern peoples at that time (unlikely), it is very doubtful that a flood thousands of miles away would be meaningful to the Chinese. Local origins of ancient Chinese characters are much more plausible.
And the right-side of 福 is supposed to be a wine vessel, as obvious from its archaic form:

January 15, 2009 at 2:16 AMWhen the lady said 咱妈, doesn't it imply that both of them share the same mother, hence making them brother and sister, rather than husband and wife?

March 4, 2009 at 2:50 AMCan I use 解剖 to refer to cutting up an animal for food, i.e. carving up a turkey? Or do I just use 切 in this situation? Thanks.
