May 23, 2007 at 1:44 AMHi Bazza and everyone, 好臭 (hǎo chòu) Actually, (as I'm sure you've guessed) here the 好 (hǎo) doesn't mean good. In this kind of structure, the meaning of 好 (hǎo) becomes more like "very" or "so". So 好臭 (hǎo chòu) actually means "very smelly" or "so smelly." We are often taught to use the more formal 很 (hěn) before adjectives. However, in spoken Chinese, 好 (hǎo) is also very commonly used.

May 23, 2007 at 1:12 AMHi user36223, The 的 (de) in the sentence you mention is a mood/modal particle (in Chinese: 语气词 yǔqìcí). It's function in this sentence is to add a feeling of certainty, affirmation. It is not part of any grammar structure.
