So Dear Amber is going to have a weekly segment on love advice? This could be the start of something big and Chinesepod may get more hits as Amber (aka Dr. Love) doles out more advice on cross-cultural love. ;-)

Amber, 我不相信你只有会说两个台语词。我想你会认识这句台语话: “你恨水!” Art P.S. I know you'll get it, so gotcha for fibbing about your Taiwanese vocabulary. :-)

I posted this in a previous lesson, but for those unfamiliar with this video, http://www.danwei.org/danwei_tv/sexy_beijing_chinese_peoples_e.php, it is funny and interesting.

My colleagues in Tianjin all use English names. It makes it easier for their non-Chinese colleagues to remember. I was surprised to learn that a number of Tianjin colleagues don't call each other by Chinese names and don't even know each other's Chinese names. Each time I work with Tianjin colleagues I've never worked with before, I always ask them to write down their Chinese names. Then I give them my Chinese name. The ensuing interaction is always fun because they tell me the meaning of their Chinese names.

Lunetta, You may get rich by finding some Chinese in your hometown and let them bid for your phone number! ;-)

When I was in a Xian tourist trap last year, I piggybacked on the bargaining prowess of some folks in my tour group. They speak fluent Mandarin. After they told me the price of an item they got, I went up to the sales lady and told her that I want the same price for the item I was holding. Since another tour group just got into the store and she didn't want them to hear the price I mentioned, she looked at me and said "小声一点!". This was one of my very few shopping experiences in China.

I told a Chinese colleague of mine that he should set his wedding date to May 18th of next year. I suppose phone numbers with the permutations of 514 and 415 can be bought cheaply!
