I trace my roots to Fujian and I discovered a few years ago that I, like many Southern Chinese, have problems with these pairs of sounds: s-sh, c-ch and z-zh. For a long time, I was cursed with the shi shibboleth. I pronounced 十 (shi) as si (四). I only learned how to pronounce the sh sounds three years ago from doing drills in my Mandarin class. I still have trouble distinguishing z-zh and c-ch. My Mandarin language professor -- a Beijinger -- told me that this is common for people like me. But some of my Chinese friends in Chicago found my struggles with these sounds to be funny.

Since Chinesepod started a category of Japanese topics, how about a lesson on Astroboy? Last year, I came across a Shanghai shop selling Astroboy paraphernalia. One request for Jenny, how about starting some lessons on stories from 三国演义？
