July 16, 2012 at 5:03 AMMore on 老婆 and 太太
I'm not sure why I didn't think of it before, but the CPod glossary has a lot of examples for both words. From looking, it does seem ok to say "我太太..."
Examples:
李太太,你好。 (You wouldn't address someone using a surname before 老婆)
小王,这是我太太。(这是我老婆 is ok too)
他和他太太都是中国人。(老婆 would be ok here)
你来找王太太吗?对。 ( If you want to use 老婆,you would need to say "你来找(surname)先生的老婆吗。Not sure how natural that is, however.)
老婆,算了,上车吧!
老婆,到我们了。
I don't think 太太 is appropriate for the two examples above. Also, 太太 sounds more formal. One other tricky thing is which surname to use when addressing a married woman. Chinese women don't change their name after marriage. I believe if you address them with anything but 太太 (小姐,阿姨,总,老师, ect。)you use the woman's surname. However, with 太太 I think it's normally the husbands surname. Since I'm not positive, hopefully a native speaker or someone more knowledgeable than myself can confirm this。

July 14, 2012 at 7:27 PM老婆 and 老公 are very common to use even when you're just dating someone. I often saw my high school kids using 老公 and 老婆 while texting their boyfriend or girlfriend. Young couples who aren't married yet also use the those two terms frequently, and of course they're both common after marriage as well (as a greeting to your spouse or for other people referring to your spouse). As far as 太太 and 先生,I don't think you would ever greet your own spouse using these, but others could refer to your spouse using them. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to talk about your own spouse using "我太太” or "我先生." Maybe someone else can answer that one.

July 14, 2012 at 7:11 PMI hear middle aged women using the term a lot, especially in the Shanghai dialect. My cleaning 阿姨 always addresses me as 小姑娘 and my boyfriend's mom also calls me 小姑娘 when speaking with others about me(in Shanghainese).
