August 9, 2012 at 5:06 PMThough not a member of the team, I'll share a tip that I use. As a non native speaker, I'll normally google phrases in quotes and look at the returned search results to get an idea of how common a phrase or word might be. For example, if you search 乱七八糟 in quotes (which is one of the most common 成语 I can think of), google returns about 25 million results. Then I tried to think of some other 成语 which are much less common than 乱七八糟，but that I still have come across several times in native materials. 沉默寡言 returns 5 million and 有条不紊 gives me 8 million. 管手管脚 does come up in several dictionaries, so it's obviously a set phrase, but it only gets about 100,000 hits. It seems like it's pretty rare. I try to learn the more frequent vocabulary first, so sometimes I'll use this method when deciding whether or not I'll add something to my SRS to study for the future.

After thinking how incredibly 巧 it would be to find a mouse in my room, I start hunting. In the end, I only found a cricket. If I had to choose, I would definitely call it a rat cricket.
