October 31, 2012 at 12:48 PMWhen I mention this to foreigners, they seem to understand that naturally Japan and China would have had this type of exchange both of ideas and people moving back and forth, but it seems to be rarely mentioned in China or in discussions with Chinese. Anyway, it's nice to learn about this.

October 30, 2012 at 1:50 PMAgreed. I remember when I first started doing the 请问 series. I've done over 100 Intermediate lessons since then, and all but a dozen of the 请问, which I'm currently working on. I still have a long way to go with Mandarin, but 请问 has helped a ton with often simple, but essential language.

November 1, 2012 at 7:31 AMAren't 万圣节 and 诸圣日 just synonyms? Both of them are just translations of All (万、诸）Saints' (圣) Day (节、日). Every time I've explained that Halloween is really 万圣节前夕, I feel like my Chinese friends seem to understand that. Most of my foreign friends are lazy about making the distinction, so that doesn't help.
I suppose the same split has happened with 春节 and New Year's. All my friends seem to call it Chinese New Year's, but no one in China would actually say that in Mandarin. It would be the equivalent of me calling January 1st "Gregorian New Year" or "Western New Year".
