I was just wondering about this as well. I guess we could also say word-for-word translation, but really this would be character-for-character translation. Definitely useful vocabulary.

John, I'm very thankful for the transitive and intransitive distinction. Chinese verbs may not fit perfectly into those categories, but it does help with most.

The most useful phrase for me here was actually 去之前. I had never heard that before.

Catch more bees with honey than with vinegar? I'm sure whoever thought of this phrase has never actually raised bees or even watched them. Bees may be attracted to honey because of the sugar, but planting flowering plants would be better.

哈哈,看一下韦拉写的帖子,这个不是男女差异吧?你的朋友们都是女的是不是?开玩笑。。。。。。尽管事实上俺的朋友也是这样,但是我想问你这些朋友是住在中国的北美人还是住在北美的北美人?

请修改我的错误。(可以说请修改任何错误吗?)

也是报刊、文件的量词,对吧?比如,我们可不可以说一份儿周刊或订一份儿周刊?

This thread still seem very foreigner-specific or otherwise focused on Chinese travelling abroad. For a Chinese individual looking for a secure place to park his cash, he doesn't have the same options a, for example, North American would. Banks do not offer high interest rates, so that they can keep markets and infrastructure projects liquid and flush with cash. Because of the low interest rates, Chinese have moved to purchasing relatively illiquid assets, like housing. As a Chinese individual, if you can't or don't want to buy another property and also don't want to keep all your savings in RMB, why not purchase some U.S. or Canadian cash. It's largely for the same reason the Chinese government purchases US T-bonds - they're stable, and the return is guaranteed. The same with the dollar. The US has serious problems it must address (and hopefully will, regardless of who's president next), but our currency is not going to tank any time soon.
