If one reads 大风 in Cantonese, the 大 actually sound like 太, which would render something like typhoon. There seems to be some evidence that typhoon didn't originally come from Chinese, but I think it's interesting nevertheless. The same is true for the Japanese reading of 大. If one changes 大 to tài and 君 to kūn, you end up with tycoon.

John, that reminds me of practicing criticism sandwiches, which are quite useful anytime one is working with people. The criticism is the meat, but it's surrounded by two complimentary (perhaps even complementary) buns. It's difficult, but it sounds much less confrontational.

Very true, but I find the high-speed rail in China to be a great opportunity to catch up on reading (or sleep). Driving is not nearly so stress-free.

It China, the Mao suit is actually know as 中山装, which is testament to the fact that they had really been around for a while before Mao. But, I've always had the feeling that Mao is much more (in)famous in the west, so he earned the association.

MOVEMBER!!! I'll write a more detailed description of this elsewhere, but I hope my Aussie brethren will support me in asking for a dialogue about this phenomenon that is nearly nonexistent in China.

What does Pete say at 14:50? Was it the name of a place?

It was nice to hear John mention that it took him a while to learn 不理, even though 理 doesn't seem like it's used much by itself. I had the same revelation not too long ago.
