他拿了几块巧克力。
tā ná le jǐ kuài qiǎokèlì.
(He picked up a few pieces of chocolate.)
I understand that a lot of Chinese is based on context, and that 几 jǐ can mean "how many?" or "a few". But how would you know if the speaker was saying "He picked up a few pieces of chocolate." or "How many peices of chocolate did he pick up?"
I'm probably overanalyzing that one, but I'm wondering if there might be a slight clue.

帮我拿一下，好吗？
bāng wǒ ná yīxià，hǎo ma?
(Help me grab that, would you?)
Is that implied but not needed to be spoken? I would think it'd be:
帮我拿一下那个，好吗？
bāng wǒ ná yīxià nèi ge，hǎo ma?

That reminds me of a phrase I was taught when I first started learning Chinese:
你身体好吗?
nǐ shēntǐ hǎo ma?
How are you? (Literally, Your health good?)
I never hear this used. Is it a common phrase in China?

I agree with RJ regarding the transcripts...they would be a great bonus (I might say necessity) to these video gems.

October 17, 2008 at 1:23 AMCPod, many of the new audio reviews include Pete doing the English. His spoken Chinese sounded pretty darn good in his News & Features debut. I'm wondering if he could do some of the audio reviews speaking the Chinese instead.
Nothing against Connie's sweet voice (we all LOVE it), but I'm a bit worried my spoken Chinese might have the potential of attracting the wrong gender!! (Not that there's anything wrong with that...remember Seinfeld?!).
Anyway, I understand that you may prefer a native Chinese speaking the Mandarin...what about David? Though I'm sure he's got enough on his plate running the studio, as well as his acting parts.
Anyway, I think it'd be nice for us guys if we could get some Chinese audio using male voices. Just a suggestion...thanks!
