February 27, 2009 at 3:48 AMHere are some linguistic tips about the Mongolian language （蒙古语）. Mongolian is mainly used both in Mongolian People's Republic (蒙古国) and in Inner Mongolian Autonomous District (内蒙古) in the PRC, however their lingustic situations are rather different from each other.
You can hear authentic Mongolian in 蒙古国, but interestingly they don't use traditional Mongolian characters anymore, probably because it's somewhat cumbersome to write, but primarily use Cyrillic alphabets because of the influence of Russia, which helped the country become independent from China in 1921.
On the other hand, Mongolian characters, which is originated in Uighur characters, are still used in 内蒙古 of the PRC. You can see both Chinese and Mongolian characters written on a sign as required by law. Unfortunately, the Mongolian language/culture have been highly sinicized, and the number of speakers has been decreasing especially in urban areas in 内蒙古.

Don't worry at all. Chinese children can learn how not to get cheated in everyday life through this kind of entertainments, which is a must in Chinese society. That said, some might learn how to cheat instead, haha.

To tell you the truth, I also have difficulty understanding what the two Chinese comedians are saying, even though I've lived here in northeast China over the past several years. So, don't be disappointed if you can't make out what they are saying, haha.
I'm afraid I have poor listening comprehension in Chinese (and in English), and to make matters worse, I usually don't see Chinese TV programms at home. It's a bit too late, but I think I should have more actively exposed myself to REAL Chinese, just like Pete has been diligently doing. Young guys, there is hope. Just keep learning!
Now, let me get back to Japanese anime........

My Sassy Girl is very popular in China too. Of course, I also enjoyed seeing it several years ago. Its Chinese title is 我的野蛮女友 （My Barbarous Girlfriend）, and its original one is 엽기적인 그녀 (我的猎奇女友, My Bizarre Girlfriend).

The counterpart in Japanese is "出藍の誉れ" (shutsu-ran no homare), and off course it's originated in Chinese 青出于蓝. The Japanese one literally means "achieving honor by surpassing his teacher", which is considered very important in Japan, where people place great importance on craftsmanship.

胡 (an ancient ethnic group in China ) and 胡 （beard） happen to have the same form in the PRC, but actually they were two different characters before the simplification of Chinese characters in 1950'. The shape of the latter one, beard, was 鬍, as you said.
