February 21, 2009 at 8:59 AM我认识一个过分讲究生肖的中国女人。这个老人家有一儿一女。听说，她曾因为生肖不对而不同意女儿结婚。后来她女儿好不容易找到了一个生肖符合条件的男朋友。当然这个很迷信的母亲高兴地同意女儿出嫁。很遗憾的是她的女婿虽然属一个很理想的生肖，但是既没有钱，也没有固定职业。看样子迷信的代价很昂贵。
我的故事还没结束。这个盲目迷信生肖相克的女人还有一个单身儿子。他今年已经三十三岁，还没有稳定工作。不过大家不用担心。据他妈妈说，这次对她未来儿媳妇的要求没那么高，就是说，十二生肖中竟有三个相生的，所以她儿子肯定会好找女朋友！
玩笑归玩笑，其实我老觉得蛮奇怪。他们家庭条件并不很好，而且中国男生已经很难找老婆，但是却对结婚对象那么挑剔。我不得不说，她儿子好像没戏了。跟生肖迷信问题比起来，风水这个东西还有救，因为你最起码有选择的余地。可是你改不了自己的出生年月日！

You can say "下一年" (= 明年) and "上一年" （＝ 去年）, but please be noted they are not as common as, e.g. 下个月 (next month) or 上个星期 (last week). There are other words such as 昨年 (zuo2nian2, last year) and 来年 (lai2nian2, next year) mainly used in classical Chinese. Interestingly, they are very commonly used in modern Japanese, as is often the case with Chinese words used in Japan.

I completely forgot about the song "Love is over" (爱情到期了？, haha) sung by 欧阳菲菲 (ou1yang2 fei1fei), who was an popular Taiwan singer in Japan when I was very young. Incidentally, 欧阳 is one of the few two-character Chinese family name, and it's listed in 百家姓 (bai3jia1xing4) and ranked 412th in the modern Chinese names ranking.

Thanks, guys. It seems that English Confucius jokes are much more difficult for me to deciper than original Confucian Analects! Let me try to (freely) translate the Confucius quote below with flavor of American jokes.

I'm dimly familiar with the phrase "He who stands on toilet, is high on pot". What do you American guys mean by that? Actually I'm more interested in the English expression than in the Confucius quote!

交货周期 (订货至交货的时间)
生产周期 (产品从开始生产到完成的时间)
I have no idea whether these words are OFTEN used by native people. Probably NOT, haha. They are highly specialized terms, indeed.

康熙字典 lists the character "偱" (definition, 述), and says it's also listed in 正字通, a dictionary edited in the era of Ming dynasty. Conversely speaking, other major ancient dictionaries/rhyme books such as 说文解字 and 广韵 don't contain this character.
For the record, 说文解字 (100 A.D.) lists 述, and defines it as "循", and therefore you can say both 偱 and 循 have the same meaning "述". In classical Chinese, "述" primarily means "遵循", unlike that in modern Chinese.
Probably 偱 is a relatively new variant form (or a dialect character?) of 循. Actually, 正字通 is well known for containg a lot of dialect information of Chinese characters. None of my modern Chinese dictionaries list this character.
