January 6, 2009 at 12:07 PMHi wchan,

January 6, 2009 at 11:18 AMHi calkins,
Regarding 这么 and 那么, hehe, this is a rather tricky issue. Hitokiri and I discuss it before in the following thread, although still not enough to clarify the usage. To be honest, I still don't understand well how to use them properly.

January 6, 2009 at 10:57 AMHi calkins,
瓦斯 is a Cantonese transliteration of gas, as is often the case with foreign words in Mandarin. 瓦斯 is pronounced as "uga-si" in Cantonese. That said, actually 瓦斯 is also used in Japanese to mean "gas" (ga-su in Japanese), so it's highly possible that 瓦斯 is one of those Japan-made Chinese words, which were mainly invented by Japanese inteligencia during the latter half of the 19th century and later introduced to China.

January 6, 2009 at 6:55 AMHi miantiao,
你说的很对。中国历史的精粹确实在于春秋战国时代,也可以说中国历史越古越精彩。与此相反,我个人对明清以后的历史不太感兴趣, 新中国的历史就不用说了,还是觉得它们不如先秦人物和故事。但仔细想想,我这么想也是不是中老年人特有的一种“怀旧情绪”, 还是所谓的“美化历史”?日本有一句俗话:女人从远处看显得最漂亮!说不定历史也跟女人一样。

January 6, 2009 at 5:07 AMAnyway, it's a rather tough job for me to write the same thing both in Chinese and in English, hehe, so I will just keep writing basically in English and sometimes use a few Chinese words (with pinyin) in my comments here.
Regarding today's topic, I never pay my electricity bill by automatic draft in China. This is partly because I don't trust it, but mainly because I have no confidence to powerfully negotiate with bank clerks when trouble happens.....

January 6, 2009 at 4:47 AMHi sballa,
As you may already know, the names of some major banks in China are worth noting, namely 农业银行 (Agricultural Bnak),建设银行 (Construction Bank),and 交通银行 (Bank of Communications). There is even 土地银行 (Land Bank). The names all represent major functions of these banks when they were established several decades ago in China.
