May 9, 2008 at 12:56 PM小时候我以为长大之后肯定会成为个聪明的大人， 四十年前的我相信人是年龄越大越有智慧的存在。 孔子说过吾十有五而志于学三十而立四十而不惑 五十而知天命六十而耳顺七十而从心所欲不逾矩。 十五岁时的我不但不志于学反而对学问感到厌恶， 我三十而立时也没有本事或者没有巩固的立足点， 当我四十不惑时才开始跳槽每天都是犹豫的日子。 我快知命之年倒不知天命并且随心所欲容易逾矩。 我老父母亲总叹息说你这个儿子怎么那么没出息， 我们两口子年轻时就整天拼命地工作比你更卖力! 古埃及很早就有一句话叫当代年轻人真是没办法， 我怀疑在殷墟发现的甲骨文也可能有类似的记载。

May 8, 2008 at 6:38 AM毛泽东 was born in 湖南省韶山 in 1893. One of his favorite dishes was 湖南家常菜 ”红烧肉”. And 毛主席 also loved dishes featuring 武昌鱼. 武昌 is the name of a place in 湖北省. I like to eat 红烧武昌鱼. May 7, 2008 at 12:02 PMIt seems to me that the character “倒” is very helpful to make your Chinese sound a little more “地道”, so next time I will definitely try to intentionally use the character in my posting written in Chinese, although it doesn’t seem to be so easy for us foreign learners to use it properly. 那倒是！

May 7, 2008 at 3:36 AMI have a good memory of Chicago. When I went to the U.S. on business for the first time, more than twenty years ago, I managed to make time and visited the city. The purpose of the stopover was to look at a Renoir (雷诺阿, lei2 nuo4 a1) “On the Terrace”, one of my most favorite pictures, at Art Institute of Chicago. What a shame I caught a heavy cold on that day of all others, and missed the opportunity to look at the masterpiece. What is worse, I couldn’t even see the Sears Tower (希尔斯大厦, xi1 er3 si1 da4 sha4) since I stayed in a hotel room all day long. May 6, 2008 at 3:42 AMHi hitokiri6993, This is a supplemental explanation for “谁” (shui2 and shei2). As you know, some Chinese characters have a few different pronunciations, and they are called “多音字 (duo1 yin1 zi4)”. And some of 多音字 have two contrasting readings, namely colloquial and literary one. As to “谁”, the reading “shei2” is more colloquial than “shui2”, but of course the latter is also used especially in a relatively formal situation. In ancient written Chinese, the character “谁” had only one reading which was the counterpart of “shui2” in modern Mandarin. The same goes for, e.g. “熟” (shu2, shou2) and “色” (se4, shai3). In the case of “熟悉”, both “shu2 xi1” and “shou2 xi1” would be OK in conversation, but it should be pronounced “shu2”, for example, when you read a chengyu (成语), such as 轻车熟路 (qing1 che1 shu2 lu4)…..theoretically.

Looks like I need a new pair of glasses. Believe me, this is not a joke………unfortunately. 我喜欢喝啤酒， I like to drink beer, 不过不太爱吃牛肉。 but I don’t like to eat beef very much.
