Anyway, learning a foreign language through such a somewhat pungent conversation is a little uncomfortable for me, even though I know such is life! Hi henning, I really look forward to studying Chinese through Si-Fi lessons and dialogues full of words and sentences free from worldliness, such as a laser ray gun, warp, and space-time. By the way, one of my textbooks tells me that 在一起 is a roundabout way to refer to sex. “干那个” or “做那个” might be more direct references.

I hear that 河莉秀 (Hallis) got a gender change operation in Japan about ten years ago, and I believe that “she” certainly had plastic surgeries in Korea. It seems that those kinds of medical techniques in Asia are not so bad. Like it or not, you cannot stop these trends anymore especially in a society where people place great importance on privacy and individual freedom. Criticizing transsexuals “officially” has been becoming more difficult, and on the contrary, supporting them sounds trendy and fashionable recently. Let me play devil’s advocate. The last thing I want to hear in a “transsexual” discussion is “I like 河莉秀 and support her because SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL.” Conversely speaking, she is just one of rare exceptions, and I imagine the less beautiful she is, the less likely people would support her. Everyone has the liberty to do what he or she wants to do as far as laws permit, therefore I am willing to admit that I have no choice but to support transsexuals, or at least I have no right to deny them basic human rights. But this does not necessarily mean that I do not have a bias against them. Frankly and exactly, I support transsexuals only as long as they are “NOT in my backyard.” For example, in case my son should happen to fall in love with an ex-male girlfriend, I am sure that I would definitely kick “her” out of my “backyard.” I am sorry that I am just one of those conservative old guys.

That might be an everlasting objective/problem in foreign language education. This topic reminds me of “千文字” (qian1 wen2 zi4), the thousand characters classic. February 27, 2008 at 8:50 AMHi rich, As far as I can think of, “有什么新鲜事吗?” is the shortest translation for “what’s new?” And I still think that “最近怎么样?” might be the most natural one (as a greeting) for “what’s new?”, although it does not have exactly the same meaning.

It seems that online Chinese dictionaries are much better than I ever imagined. Pena007, I would like to recommend you try to find similar dictionaries in French!
