March 6, 2008 at 3:04 AMJudging from the dialogue, it seems that you can easily get newspapers printed in English in large cities such as Shanghai. I cannot find any here in a local small city in China. Today, of course it does not matter anymore as long as you can access the Internet, but the situation was completely different when I first came to China more than twenty years ago. 报告 (bao4 gao4).... report 报道 (bao4 dao4).... news report 报社 (bao4 she4).... a newspaper company 报刊杂志 (bao4 kan1 za2 zhi4) ................................newspapers and magazines

March 5, 2008 at 9:24 AM至今我还清楚记得第一次看土星环的感动。 那是我刚上初中时通过我同学哥哥新买的 一个小折射望远镜看的宝石我一辈子难忘。 我考上大学时妈妈给我买了个口径十厘米 的名牌反射望远镜我当然高兴得跳起来了! 我拼命打工攒钱后买到了一套尼康照相机， 开始用望远镜拍摄星云月亮等的天体照片。 深更半夜在暗室里自己洗印相片多么有趣! 很可惜我没有办法把我的望远镜拿到中国， 而且因为我没有汽车晚上自己出去不方便， 只好用从日本带来的一副双筒镜观赏星星。 其实只靠肉眼看月亮银河流星等都很漂亮， 特别是零一年看到的狮子座流星雨太灿烂。 很遗憾的是星空下的约会从来就没实现过。

March 5, 2008 at 6:01 AMIt seems that the guy in the dialogue really does not know much about stars and planets. It is extremely difficult to see Mercury because the planet is very close to the Sun. I tried to find the planet at dawn or evening many times before, but without success. It is said that even Copernicus had no chance to see Mercury in his lifetime, let alone me!

As you said, 尽量 (jin3 liang4, adverb) is often being pronounced “jin4 liang4” in daily conversation, just like 卑鄙 (be1 bi3) is pronounced “be1 bi4” customarily. But there is a clear distinction between the usages of those two 尽量, i.e. adverb and verb. It seems to me that both 尽量 in your two example sentences are all adverbs, therefore your second example is not appropriate. I guess that 尽量 (jin4 liang4, verb), such as 还没尽量, is not frequently used in everyday conversation, although I am not so sure. And as is often the case, “mispronunciation drives out authentic one”. Such is a language!

March 4, 2008 at 6:26 AMHi nishizhutou, I do not think that the example sentence for 尽量 (jin4 liang4) is appropriate. Exactly speaking, 尽量 (jin3 liang4, adverb) means “as much as possible”, and 尽量 (jin4 liang4, verb) means “to eat or drink to the full, to the great extent”. So an appropriate example should be “我喝了一瓶白酒，还没尽量 (jin4 liang4)”. Anyway, they are very confusing. Btw, I did not know that traditional Chinese makes the distinction between 盡 （jin4） and 儘 （jin3）, thanks for your info!

She can do several things very effectively at one time in front of her PC, such as watching a movie, eating snacks, net surfing, sending emails and short messages, making a cell phone call, and of course, chatting online. The problem is that she unfortunately has very poor “doing homework” function in her multitasking capability. chat 聊天 (liao2 tian1) online 在线 (zai4 xian4) multitask 多任务 (duo1 ren4 wu4)
