October 10, 2007 at 11:35 AMHi oolung, I understand your problem. Although I have perfect listening comprehension in Japanese, since I am Japanese, but I often can’t catch what Chinese are saying in movies. Chinese pronunciation is much more complicated than Japanese one. No need to be upset!

October 10, 2007 at 7:10 AMOne of my Chinese friends, 东北男人, is working in 广东 now. He often complains that Cantonese people are very “stingy” because they like to split the bill. I always comfort him by saying in both cases, treat and going Dutch, the total amount of money he pays would eventually be the same in the long run, but he still seems to love the typical Chinese endless fighting.

October 10, 2007 at 2:13 AMWhat a GREAT LESSON! This is definitely the most useful lesson I’ve ever learned in Chinesepod. Today’s dialogue is full of practical expressions. You must memorize all of them if you come to China. My boss often treats me to lunch or dinner and usually doesn’t let me pay the bill for them. I will try to use the tactics I learned here after checking if my credit cards are still valid.

October 9, 2007 at 3:51 AMI think that “你明天要来吗?” would also be OK, though not sure. Anyway, Chinese is a very word-conserving language, so the shorter the better when speaking.

October 8, 2007 at 12:28 PM我有一本叫学生成语词典的书。 这小词典收录将近六百条成语。 其前言中写着说这些都是小学 课本中最基本最常见的四个字。 我另有一本收词六千条的词典。 但是看起来这也还不算太大的。 有些大词典竟然收录好几万条。 中国成语世界真是无穷无尽啊!

October 8, 2007 at 2:21 AMHi pulosm, Thank you for your reply, which is very interesting to me. “学” was pronounced as something like “hok” or “ok” in ancient China, until more than 1,000 years ago. And some southern dialects, Cantonese included, still preserve the reading!

East Asian people generally think that they are not good at foreign languages and their native tongues are not major ones in the world, therefore they are very impressed, me included, when Western people speak their native languages fluently.
