July 23, 2007 at 8:33 AMHi Clarence! You are right. Just listening to Chinesepod would not be enough to improve your Mandarin even though it is definitely one of the best educational podcasts, which makes your learning more fun and exciting. You can’t get everything you need for learning Chinese here, therefore you should diversify sources of learning materials in line with your needs, level, ability and preference. If you’d like to study grammar and vocabulary more systematically, using good study guides/reference books is a must. As for me, I have about sixty books on Chinese, although I have yet to read some of "my collection.”

July 23, 2007 at 5:42 AMAnother depressing dialogue on "blue Monday." I don't feel like listening to that twice. I look forward to a much invigorating storyline next Monday. How about finding him a brilliant girlfriend ?

July 23, 2007 at 2:18 AMHi DocMom and Rich! The usage of 好容易 and 好不容易 is a little confusing. When they are used as adverbs, both mean “barely” or “manage to”. 好容易才把这个作业做完了….barely finished 好不容易才把这个作业做完了….barely finished When used as adjectives, you can translate them literally. I hope I have clarified them correctly. 把这个作业做完不容易….not easy 把这个作业做完好容易….very easy 把这个作业做完好不容易….very difficult ps Thanks, Amber!

July 22, 2007 at 12:54 PMHi Rich! Thanks a lot for your new avatar, which is presumably intended to resemble a retired red-nosed reindeer or something like that. I showed your photo to my lovely dog, I hate to say it, but she is a bit scared about it. She told me that she would much prefer bailang's dog. By the way, I totally agree with your writing-is-vital-in-learning-languages theory. That is the prime reason why I post here every day.

July 21, 2007 at 8:51 AMHi henning! You often see that wording in news articles. The following is one of my favorite quotes. Newton said, 我之所以比别人看得更远, 是因为我站在巨人的肩膀上。

July 21, 2007 at 4:33 AM别提什么社交网站。 我这个人哪有时间 在虚拟空间聊闲话。 除了在这学习中文、 我还得看网上新闻 和有关爱好的网站。 我对社交网站上癮 的话我就快要没有 来这学习的时间了。 我的小狗也一定会 反对我参加社交网。 她怕失去散步时间。

July 24, 2007 at 4:40 AMMost Japanese people, especially children, like to eat curry with rice very much. I still remember a Japanese curry shop, where curries came in several grades of hotness, for example, two times hotter, ten times hotter, and so on. Furthermore you get a dish of curry on the house if you can eat up a thirty-times-hotter curry in ten minutes. Hi LostInAsia, Bird’s eye chillies are really really awful peppers.
