I agree with you it is somtimes difficult to exactly translate from Chinese to English because of cultural differences (the translated meanings may sound weird to native speakers).
May I suggest that in certain words or phrases that you find it difficult to translate you can try translate them into Chinese. I find that Chinese-Chinese Dictionary explain better than the Chinese-English Dictionary.
