June 15, 2011 at 5:24 PMI think they can cheat because foreigners don't know the rules. You're supposed to each show your cup after you've drunk to make sure you've ganbei'd it (or at least drunk what each person thinks is enough). If it's not enough, there is pressure to drink some more. If their cup is empty you grab the bottle from them and refill it despite their many protests. This is from my own observations in Hebei - it might be different elsewhere. Generally the pressure on women is less - but not always. We generally got away with drinking wine or beer. (But there was still the forcible refilling of empty or not-full-enough glasses.)

June 6, 2011 at 5:43 PMOh my gosh...I just remembered that I helped my 妹妹 make this. She had a two week summer trip to Beijing during undergrad and (among other things) learned about the dragons. So we made this one for her classes about five years ago...
I named him Mr. Good Fortune and he currently is living in a closet.
The 9 Parts of the Dragon
Head of a Camel
Scales of a Carp
Antlers of a Deer
Eyes of a Rabbit
Ears of a Cow
Neck of a Snake
Stomach of a Clam
Paws of a Tiger
Claws of an Eagle

June 18, 2011 at 12:37 PMSo I in one lesson's supplemental vocab there was 大老爷们儿 for "manly man". Is this not used very often, or does it have a certain connotation?
