February 8, 2009 at 12:54 PMYes, the tones are a tricky part of the chinese language, especially for us who don't speak tonal languages. If you compare di4 yi1 sheng1 to sheng1diao4 (both are in the vocab tab) you may hear the difference between the somewhat low first tone in sheng1 and the fourth tone in diao4.

I have noticed that the last word in a sentence is often less stressed than the other words. Maybe thats why the actor read it in a lower pitch. However it is still flat as a first tone should be (if my ears didn't fool me).

cPod doesn't focus on writing characters but rather on spoken mandarin. Maybe these sites can be useful when learning to write: http://www.nciku.com http://us.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php There you can see the stroke order. There is one more site with execises as well but I can't remember it's adress now...

And the pronounciation of hei1ke4 resembles that of hacker.

Thanks, I think cPod has this general policy: if posting chinese characters in the newbie and elementary discussions you should also provide pin1yin1 and the english translation. In higher level discussions posting only chinese characters is perfectly fine.
However, some think it is too cumbersome to provide pinyin therefore omitting it. So it is somewhat a "loose" policy.
If you have been around a while you have surely seen many newbies and ellies expressing their gratitude to those who provide pinyin and english.
I guess most poddies use traditional characters, but concerning the high rank of the "improve traditional character support" idea on the user voice site, I think many poddies will be glad to see both traditional and simplified characters in your posts. 欢迎来cPod!

I checked out the Rosetta stone sentence, and it was actually 伞和人一样多 san3 he2 ren2 yi1yang4 duo1 (伞 umbrella 和 and 人 person 一样 the same 多 many).
Thus, not 比 bi3.
But xemrac's translation sounds good, despite my 丢脸 mistake.

In the comment section of the last Dear Amber show there is a good-bye-Amber movie from her work mates on cPod.
Almost all of the mates say "wo3men5 hen3 xiang3 ni3". I recon' that's an example of when xiang3 means miss. (We miss you very much.)
