Hi changye,

Thanks for 拉普兰. I live about 100 km from the county border of lapland in northern sweden. Didn't realise there is a chinese name for Lapland.
We don't have any reindeer at my place but I sometimes see them about 40 km from here. I read there are reindeer in northern China as well. Did you see any there?

驯鹿 xun4lu4 reindeer
驯 xun4 tame
鹿 lu4 deer

hi yarika,

But to Chinese,No one will feel there are someting different between 请问你需要什么 and 请问你需要什么吗

Thanks, that's good to know. Maybe lujiaojie or changye could comment the translation of those two sentences.

calkins, yarika

Let me see if I got it right:

请问你需要什么吗 Please let me ask, do you need something?
In this case shenme translates to "something" and the ma is needed because it is a yes/no question: do you need ... ?
请问你需要什么 Please let me ask, what do you need? In this case shenme translates to "what", and we don't need ma since it is not a yes/no question.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I might have found a small error in the excercises. 小姐 is transcribed to xiao3jie5. Dictionary and pronounciation indicates xiao3jie3 though.

I noticed that in give face and loose face chinese uses different words for face:

Give...face 给...面子 gei3...mian4 zi5

Loose face 丢脸 diu1lian3

Is there a logical explanation for this difference?

Why does the editor put the letters in boldface even though B is not highligted when I type? I tried to edit the post like 10 times, but no success. It happened before as well :/

Amber: ... what does that mean?
Connie: xx, ta1 zuo4 le5 yi1 ge5 shi4qing2, na4 wo3 li3jie3 wei4shen2me5 zhe4me5 zou4.

I can't figure out the xx.
