Btw looks like a "not" got left out of the translation of this expansion sentence:
他不在家。(ta1 bu4 zai4 jia1)
(He's at home.)

August 28, 2009 at 6:24 AMThe expansion has 我住在市区。wo3 zhu4 zai4 shi4 qu1, "I live in the city centre".
Does anyone know the right way of saying you live in the suburbs? And how do you say you live in the countryside close to the city, or just outside of town?

August 24, 2009 at 6:41 AMWhen recording the audio review could the three different people's voices all be recorded (or mixed) at the same volume level? Sometimes the differences are so great I can't hear the quietest voice without turning up the volume on my earphones to where the loudest voice blasts my ears.

我来北京出差，顺便看看你。
(I came to Beijing on a business trip, and visited you while I was at it.)

August 20, 2009 at 5:27 AMOrkelm, welcome to the wonderful world of trying to understand spoken Chinese when they talk fast, have a touch of a dialect, or there's lots of background noise. It can feel like it's back to square one.
Faced with similar frustration I've started listening to the expansion sentences and trying to take dictation in pinyin. The idea is to specifically train phonemic recognition. However you tackle it, I'm sure you'll get through (which is also an expression of my desperate hope to muddle through this phase as well :-)

August 20, 2009 at 5:21 AMAbout 喂 wei 2/4. Last time I was in China I heard a guy who always answered his phone using the 4th tone. I've heard that the 2nd tone sounds more friendly, while the 4th tone is more curt and abrupt. Makes sense. But he started the 4th tone very high and glided down slowly, kind of fading out at the end. It sounded very laid back and friendly, despite being a fourth tone. I wish I had a recording. It was cool :-)

August 20, 2009 at 5:18 AMA question abou the expansion: 邮件 you2 jian4 is listed as meaning e-mail. Doesn't it mean normal (snail) mail? Or has the sense broadened to e-mail as well, just as in the English "you have mail"?

This wasn't too hard to spot, but when these kinds of errors occur with material that's right at the leading edge of what you're learning they can cause a lot of frustration and confusion.
