October 22, 2007 at 10:18 AMI'm having doubts, are measure words used / mandatory after large numbers, e.g. does one say 两百只鸡 / 两千只鸡 (jī) 200 / 2000 chicken, or 两百鸡 / 两千鸡 ? If the latter then 百 / 千 would be treated as measure words which would make the rule very simple, with only 二十 as the exception...

October 21, 2007 at 1:28 PMI bought a slim 8Gb Meizu M6 miniplayer recently in Shanghai for little less than1100 RMB at 易・买得 (eMarket) and I'm quite happy with it, interface is pretty simple. I also has FM which I listen to a fair amount when I go to China. I'm not a fan of Apple (though I once was) because of their close system (iPod and iPhone alike) as you mention and higher prices. But then I'm manually copying downloads to my mp3 players rather than using automatic feeds. Another popular player beyond Apple in Europe is the Cowoon D2, which has an expansion slot for additional storage.

October 21, 2007 at 10:58 AMApparently, Godzilla （ゴジラ) is a combination of two Japanese words, gorira (ゴリラ) transliteration of 'gorilla', and kujira (クジラ), 'whale'. So I guess it could be rendered in Chinese as 大猩鲸 (dàxīngjīng) from 大猩猩 (dàxīngxing) gorilla and 鲸鱼 (jīngyú) whale :-) This doesn't reflect the divine connotation in Godzilla though

October 21, 2007 at 7:42 AMRich, I spent the day at my company's branch office 分公司 (fēngōngsī) in Shanghai last week, and I heard 你的老板… more than once from assistants 秘书 (mìshu). This is a multinational company, not your local family shop, so I guess 老 (lǎobǎn) is also used to mean 'boss' in a casual sort of way when refering to one's manager / director 经理 (jīnglǐ).
