October 25, 2007 at 10:59 AMWe actually have the same problem between French, German, Italian and a number of other languages whose 'articles' do not match (le/la das/der/die) and no simple rule prevails. There are many more in Chinese but I guess you won't use all that many on a daily basis. "How do Chinese look up a measure word for a noun? It's not in the dictionaries......" It *is* in some, Wenlin / PlecoDict / ABC do list them along with most nouns. When they don't, I guess 个 will do. I find this is much more useful than a separate list of measure words, one should simply learn measure word+noun as a unit from the outset. Listing nouns without their 数量词 (shùliàngcí) is like pinyin without tones. I would suggest CPod does this systematically in the vocab listings *and* dictionary.

October 25, 2007 at 11:22 AMincidentally, the CPod dictionary has 唐人街 (Tángrénjiē) as Chinatown, but Google 谷歌 (gǔgē) returns 10 times more results with 中国城。
