September 28, 2007 at 4:02 AMI have no problem understanding the 把 construct, it feels like polish notation in calculator arithmetic to me. But it's one of those read/listen-only things that I seldom use myself.

September 27, 2007 at 11:05 AMLantian, 我发现了那个中文播客的政策: 最近我们发现许多员工在工作时间内使用厕所聊天。员工不可以在上班时上厕所天。员工只能使用厕所工作或与客户联系。 sounds familiar?

September 27, 2007 at 9:38 AMbut maybe 发票s are specific of China (same as the 1-month rule for reimbursement). When I'm on 出差 and ask for receipts at Chinese restaurants I do ask for a 收据 (shōujù) and I always get a proper receipt from a special notebook, not the 小票 that the waiter produces or that's printed out by the cash register.

September 23, 2007 at 8:30 PMNever heard DVD-9 before, most recordable DVDs are DVD-5 then (single-sided single-layer) while pre-recorded DVDs are DVD-9. So, is D五 also in use?

September 19, 2007 at 3:53 PMother question regarding driver's license 驾驶执照 (jiàshǐ zhízhào). In France we have a system whereby you get 12 points and whenever you get a speeding ticket or any other offence they take some out. You recover them within 2 years I think if you don't get into any trouble, or you can redeem them. But when you've used them all you have to start taking the test from scratch again. Anyway, how would you translate 'points' in this context?

September 19, 2007 at 3:48 PM... is it the same as a moped is what I meant, i.e. a small, urban motorbike?

September 19, 2007 at 3:47 PMI'm a little confused as to what a hybrid bike-motorbike 助动车 (zhùdòngchē) is. I though it was one of these hybrid electric/push bikes, but I it seems it does have an engine. So it is the same as a moped, which ABC translates as 机动自行车 (jīdòng zìxíngchē) ?

September 19, 2007 at 4:42 AMuh, I don't think 年轻人 meeting in such a context would say 'nice to meet you' either, they'd probably just say 'hi!'
