October 7, 2007 at 10:32 AMgive me a break ;-) how important is Mandarin to survive in a Shanghainese speaking family, how can multinational companies strive on products that average middle-class working families can't affort and such tricky questions - no for me thanks. Planning to visit the Factory on Mon.15, meanwhile I'm pleased to report I've already tasted such local delicacies as 臭豆腐 and 游子老鸭粉丝 at 莘庄镇 , an ancient style neighborhood South West of Shanghai.

October 7, 2007 at 3:39 AMhow could I ever be on the DA show ?! anyway, I'm there, it's great, only took one night to get over jetlag. Had dinner with Vera last night at a great 广东饭店, now preparing to meet other local friends whom I haven't seen for ... 13 years when Shanghai was a much different place. But I'm glad that all that modernity hasn't completely eradicated more traditional aspects, little shops and food stalls. I'm still shocked to see young people throw empty cans on the curb without a thought, probably assuming s.o. else is going to clean the street (which they are!) I've also seen a few things thrown out the window at night probably for the same reason. Traffic seems to be pretty bad, having only used public transport so far I haven't experienced it but I will today

October 6, 2007 at 3:31 PMBazza, I did take the maglev 磁浮车 （cífúchē） yesterday, quite impressive, goes up to 431km/h (that's almost 270 mph) but make sure you keep your airplane ticket, it'll save you 10 RMB (40 块 instead of 50 块). I wanted to get a return 往返 (wǎngfǎn) but that only works if you return within the day! I then switched to the subway and bought a refillable100 块 card which Vera said also works with buses and other transportation. Only thing is I underestimated the walk from 南京路 to 福建南路 with 2 heavy suitcases at 6pm on a Friday night, 这个人山人海 （rénshānrénhǎi） 的情况！but maglev+subway is perfect, fast, simple, with detailed local maps on exit. Hotel is also great, this very central 锦江之星 costs me about 250 RMB/night with membership card, and free internet access (no wireless though).

October 6, 2007 at 3:18 PM排队、插队 are good, but for the less vocal, comfortable with Chinese or if these words don't come out easily for whatever reason, I found over the past 24 hours that a no uncertain 嘿嘿嘿 with arm extended and eye contact also works pretty well! In another occasion I pushed my (heavy) suitcase across the way, that did it too.

October 8, 2007 at 1:01 AMI once bought a book that shows a number of mahjong 麻将 （májiàng） variations. I seem to remember in Shanghai style you hold less tiles, not sure. Anyway, I wouldn't even try to play here unless I had a chance to observe others play for quite a while...
