changye,

thanks for your comments, very helpful.  I especially appreciate the comment about two character words, I did not think of it that way, so great insight.

This is what makes CP so useful as a language tool, this discussion area and the people that make so many thoughtful and skilled comments.

I use a program called DimSum.  It lets me input English or Pinyin and get the Mandarin equivalent.  A bonus is the feature that shows the stroke order of the character.

I appreciate the consideration given my question.

谢谢你

pchenery,

you are of course correct about many English words with multiple meanings.  I noticed this the other day with 了and I was thinking it was a typo.  This is what makes CP so great. The level of thought and depth here is astounding. Thanks for counting 259 characters.

jonsnow,

Yes, I also use Chinese Tools for Character memorization and did not know about the mouse character recognition.  Thanks for the tip.  I use DimSum and it shows the same definitions.

mattwhyndham,

I came across this le-liao recently.  This makes my job that much more challenging.  However, this site makes the journey so much easier and pleasurable. Mostly due to the people I follow in the discussions here on CP. Thanks so much.

I have a basic question.  Everyone here is more advanced than I am so forgive me if it is too basic.

The program I am using to learn Chinese Characters has the hanzi character 从 listed twice. Once with 1st tone meaning unhurried and again with 2nd tone meaning obey or observe.

I understand that pinyin is for pronunciation, but I thought that the characters had specific meaning. So how can the same character 从 have two meanings?

thanks

Jenny,

Does your comment about Le not being used in negative form mean that you would never say, wo bu dao le?  It would always be wo mei lai?

Still working on memorizing characters, for now I am still in the pinyin worlds.

Thanks

This is my first post here on CPOD..I want to thank all the users that have been discussing lessons.  I find I learn as much from the discussion as I do from the lessons and exercises.  Also, keeps it interesting.

Great lessons BTW.  I started with Rosetta Stone..this is so much better for me.
