I read it in my mind as, "Men, there aren't (even) a few who are any good (thing)."

I can open the dialogue, vocabulary, expansion, and grammar sections for this lesson without a problem, but when I open exercises, I get a blank page. Is this problem on my end?

You guys explained so many cool phrases so clearly, and while being entertaining! You really found ways to help us understand the sense of the language in the dialogue. An awesome lesson!

On the Chinese version of Voice of America, each article I read translated the phrase "Black Friday" consistently the same way lujiaojie did. Maybe your students are not familiar with Black Friday, but are familiar with Friday the 13th (highly likely), and so simply assume the latter must be what you are talking about.

"Respect those who respect pistachios, as my old mother used to say to me."

:)

I have a T-shirt with this graphic that says, "(my husband's Chinese name) 是我的开心果“ and my husband has one that says "(my Chinese name)是我的开心果”. My husband designed the shirts - they were my Valentine's Day gift the year we married.

Luckily for me, he can also cook.

I'm afraid many of us women from "the big city" - be it New York or Shanghai, would end up vindicating your statement! I may not be beautiful, graceful, or sexy, but I can verify for you that I also, in addition, can't cook! :)

Mmm, I see your point now. I've always felt I needed to ask two or three people how much would be appropriate to give...I describe my relationship to the gift recipient to each of the three advisers in detail, then I try to kind of average what the three of them say, or take the highest number, and go with it.

I used to just give as much as I wanted, but I found I gave too much once, and caused real embarrassment and sense of obligation in the recipient.

Also, one must notice what economic level the gift recipient is at compared to the advice givers, meanwhile also taking into account the perception others have of your own economic level. You are right, it's so complex.

Well, I suppose it's not complex to those who have grown up in the system, it's just complex to those of us looking at it from the outside and trying to fit in!
