February 26, 2013 at 6:09 PMBefore corporations went to more casual dress, developers/programmers who worked in Wall Street had to wear suit and tie. It was awful, especially during the summer, I hated it - subway stations can get up to 110*F plus humidity. Linen suits didn't help much. Wall Street folks (just like lawyers) are pretty snobby about dress code - if your belt doesn't match, shirt is a little crinkled, you hear about it - not from other programmers, but bankers and such. In the early 2000s, I worked at an investment bank and they finally relaxed their dress code - khakis and collared shirt.
I have a closetful of suits and 3-4 dozen ties that I rarely have to use anymore. I'm a jeans and t-shirt guy, but sometimes, I knock the dust off one of the suits and wear it other than formal occasions. Getting spiffed up once in a while is fun.
Don't forget how conservative dress codes where in IBM's heydays. Look at all the photos of people working in IBM when mainframes were their prime business. No long hair. White shirt and tie.
