TV went through a sort of a renaissance in the past ten years, mostly thanks to HBO. Shows like The Wire, Deadwood, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under - the writing, character development, acting, production values surpasses those of movies. While there is still no lack of awful shows, reality tv and lowest common denominator fare, the best of TV when you skim off the the top is something to behold.

Even hokey campy shows like Battlestar Galactica, the reboot in 2003 totally revamped space opera science fiction. Many believe the BBC reboot of Sherlock is vastly better than the movie duo of Downey and Law. LOST, the first few seasons was something never seen before, the character development, the serialization, the hatch, unfortunately it did not end as strongly as it began. The wikis it spawned spanned hundreds of pages with dozens of characters and countless references to books, writers and historical events. Now Game of Thrones makes the serialization of LOST look like a simple fairy tale, based on a still to be finished book that reads nearly 5,000 pages, 100s, maybe even approaching a thousand characters, you need family trees and large maps to help you along.

DVD box sets changed the way viewers consume tv, no commercials, multiple seasons available to be consumed in one big gulp. It's called mainlining. The all night marathon is the gateway drug to video crack where you must finish all the seasons of show you are watching. And now streaming is getting more and more popular, if you have Netflix or Hulu, you just click a button and the next show is on. Netflix auto forwards to the next episode.

Other excellent shows, imho, are Mad Men, Friday Night Lights, Carnivale, In Treatment, Firefly, Terriers, Rubicon, Community, The West Wing.

And miniseries like Band of Brothers, Generation Kill, John Adams, all HBO productions, tell a 10 hour story that movies just do not have the time to tell.

Me, I'm enjoying The Walking Dead, Homeland and Treme. Can't wait for the next season of Game of Thrones.

TL;DR too long, didn't read. Watch "The Wire". It will change your opinion of how good tv can be. BTW, "The Wire" is President Obama's favorite show. I think he watches Homeland too.

I like this topic too. This is everyday language, what everyday people talk about.

Yes, 332 - 206. The 2000 election and the whole Florida debacle is never far from my mind during the general. Romney had planes on the runway fueled up to go and packs of lawyers ready to contest. No recount.

Florida is still too close to call. Most sites are painting it light blue instead of solid blue. Troublesome Florida. It's almost 9:30 EST.

Like many things in the US, the way elections are held should be revamped. The electoral process is antiquated and a (insert gerund curse word here) joke. It is awful. But it's near impossible to get the majority needed in congress. Don't even get me started on campaign finance.

我是好奇 - 中国的奥运会电视广播 - 就是好看吗?

美国的奥运会电视广播很糟糕.

Just wondering - how is the Olympics broadcast regarded in China? Obviously the telecast will present Chinese athletes in a good light just as the American broadcasts did. It was too syrupy for my taste. Are there complaints about tape delays, announcers and coverage of lessor known events as well?

The American telecast, at least the broadcast on NBC was god awful. I caught glimpses of the BBC's coverage and thought it was much better.
