British people also do a lot of this kind of joking. In fact we have entire TV programs dedicated to it. Just watch an episode of "Have I Got News For You" or "Mock the Week" to see.

Is anyone really buying that the pigs "froze" in Shanghai where the temperature never gets below zero C?

Especially since at the time, I read in the news that a common pig virus had been found in the river...

Some other European languages, like German and Spanish use WC as well, but I never use it in English.

I think "going Dutch" is a pretty common phrase in the UK.

I'm an engineer and I also encounter the "geek" stereotype and people being really impressed by it. In fact I work in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, and I believe there is a phrase “张江男” which refers to geeks who specifically live and work in this area.
