August 30, 2010 at 7:37 PMReminds me of calling an old lady a battle axe. Is there such a term in Chinese? So maybe when abelle and her husband are old he can call her lao3 battle axe 锤子.

July 30, 2010 at 11:30 PMKind of surprised the measure word for something round or flat (even though pizza's not truly flat) isn't used for pizza. I guess measure words for food are exempt from the ordinary.

July 13, 2010 at 12:23 AMI went in the summer of '07. The crowds I didn't really mind (hey, it's China), but those "mystical" clouds held a little too much mystery. It barely got clearer as the day went on.
Guess I'll just have to go again!

June 21, 2010 at 3:38 AM久而久之 science marches on and disproves superstition after superstition. While religion remains static and only changes it's (their) arguments to try and keep up with science. There is a reason The Enlightenment is called The Enlightenment.

June 16, 2009 at 2:14 AMThanks Zhu Qi and Pete. It's Henan Polytechnic University. Or as the the Chinese like to say: 河南理工大学.
Yes, it will be great to the historical places. Love Chinese history. But I'm also there so I can actually USE Mandarin and learn it better.

June 16, 2009 at 1:45 AMI'm signed up again with The Pod! Still jobless but I have to do this so I don't go insane from all the free time.
Won't be jobless for long though since I will be teaching English at a university in Henan! Hopefully I can relate to the students since we are around the same level of skill in our respective 2nd language. I also hope that I can do half as good a job as John probably did.
And maybe someday I will actually have a language question to post here. Till then, I'll be Pod'n it up!

September 20, 2010 at 10:46 PMIn October 2000 I was on a slow train (36 hours, believe it!) from Guanzhou to Kunming. I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and didn't use the blankets to sleep. Those next to me were a little shocked, as they wore warmer clothes and got under the blankets.
Fast forward to August 2007 in Hangzhou. YIPES! I was dying in shorts and a tank-top, while the locals were just a little uncomfortable in long pants and button-down shirts.
I agree with Bill about Northern California.
