April 20, 2010 at 10:16 AMI'm pretty sure halibut, herring, and heffalump don't come from French, as most of our "silent-h" words do! English is such a conglomeration of words poached from other languages that our pronunciation rules are pretty 随便!
FWIW, dictionary.com says the h- in herb was mute until the 19th century...so we 'merkins are just getting back to the root!

April 22, 2010 at 1:52 AMI didn't really care about (s)him one way or the other until I read an interview with the designer. He was asked why he thought children seemed to like HaiBao but adults didn't seem to have a very positive reaction. The designer's reply was along the lines of, "No, I don't think so. I think everyone who sees HaiBao loves him." That was enough to turn me off.
