August 12, 2013 at 3:32 PMis 喏 the same as 'nuo, here you go' as in giving someone something?
Or do I have that mixed up with something else?

July 29, 2013 at 3:23 PMThank god it was cold and rainy that day--we skipped the van ride to the beach. haha
Also, they assured my wife that they did indeed have large size outfits but I am not sure they realized how tall 1.9 meters really is. LOL!
Now I am still fighting having the poster sized portrait hung above our sofa in the family room. She says it is very normal but in the US, it is just too weird.
Posted on: Cold Countries
July 29, 2013 at 2:49 PMLooks like Sweden followed closely by Finland if you look at record historic lows. Iceland is pretty mild by comparison.
minus 53 degrees C. burr
Course, I am in Minnesota and we had a minus 51 C. and at that point, cold is cold!

July 8, 2013 at 8:21 PMI like to nitpick so here I go. :-)
Calorie IS a metric unit but now generally superseded by the joule--at least for food energy.
It is the approximate amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celcius.
And to be more clear, a food calorie is actually a kcal which IS equal to approximately 4.2 kJ so essentially John is right.
I only realize this because looking at the picture, I was at first getting 364kJ equal to 86939 cal but then realizing that food calorie is acutally kcal but that would be too confusing to the average American so the they dumbed it down years ago. LOL. EU labels I think have both kJ and kcal (not calorie).
Posted on: Bad Luck with Buses
July 5, 2013 at 1:19 PMOnce I made the leap to add the bus to my transportation modes, it was awesome. It was intimidating but after that first ride, I realized it was pretty easy.
The Chinese guys at the office would always wonder why I did not take a cab like all the other western guys but I find the subway/bus combo so much more liberating than trying to explain to a cab driver about where I want to go.
I learned 公共汽车 gōng gòng qì chē, is this common or one of those 'textbook' words? I would ask, 公共汽车在哪里? and people would seem to understand of course...

July 1, 2013 at 3:26 PMThank God my mother in law did not come to America to visit until after the yuezi (月子).
I think she would have even driven my wife crazy! LOL.
I would come home from work and find by sweaty baby in 3 layers of clothing and a blanket! But she meant well--I learned to bite my tongue for 6 months.
