December 22, 2007 at 3:54 AMThere is a fantastic eyeglass market next to the North Railway station in Shanghai - very inexpensive glasses and contact lenses with a huge selection and low prices due to the intense competition. They will give you an vision test (a real experience-no letters but "E"s positioned in various ways and sizes) and then shape the lens and fitted to the frames on the spot.

December 15, 2007 at 4:56 AMMany middle-class Shanghainese hire ayi's. When we first arrived in China, we didn't hire an ayi initially for the first couple of weeks. My staff, which were all young Chinese professionals, asked me why i hadn't yet hired one - "it is very normal and inexpensive to do so". It surprised me how prevalent the practice was among the locals. And yes, the pic is great.
