December 4, 2007 at 5:19 AMI would disagree with John about AMEX. It is accepted in all major hotels and upscale restaurants in the larger cities. However, I would agree that there are also many smaller, more economical places where it would be difficult to use. So, it depends to some extent if you are going on a business trip on a company expense account or are touring around on your own examining all of China's nooks and crannies (the latter being a whole lot more fun)!

November 29, 2007 at 5:00 AMAlso, keep in mind that it is practical for many foreigners living and doing business in China to adopt Chinese names in order to make it easier for Chinese to refer to them. Some foreigners have names that are very difficult for Chinese to pronounce.

I just thought it was a cute slip (and a little bit of a cultural curiousity). It was not meant to be any criticism at all! Is the embarrassment a sign of self-imposed perfection? July 5, 2007 at 4:24 AMIn China, I used to work around a lot of Shanghainese speaking their dialect. The frequent use of "dei va" , more so than "dui ba" in Mandarin I would say, seemed to be a curious characteristic of the dialect. 龙飞

July 5, 2007 at 4:07 AMPerhaps Dusty is hinting at an issue that has to do with Pinyin phonetics. I always found Pinyin to be helpful because it is so phonetic EXCEPT when it comes to the 'yun' word. In standard Mandarin it is pronounced as a sharp "win" sound, not as a written "yun" would suggest. This pronunciation is recorded well in the Dialog and Vocabulary section. I used to pronounce this incorrectly, and probably incomprehensibly to most, until a Chinese friend corrected me on it.
