August 25, 2013 at 4:35 PM那个/这个 is a common sentence pattern. I think it adds some emphasis and makes it more clear that you are pointing out a particular thing. Generally, it is not strictly "needed", though.

目前为止斯诺登还滞留莫斯科机场，几个国家核实后还没收到他的庇护申请报。好像斯诺登一写申请，就在政府官员手里自动点燃。连日来没有新的消息，民众就逐渐失去兴趣。我估计斯诺登已经揭露了差不多所有他知道的秘密。一位元首一考虑收留斯诺登，就收到美国政府打来的电话提醒那位，虽然他跟美国一样龃龉，但是他也有不想被揭露的秘密。如果斯诺登滞留机场一辈子美国政府无所谓，就会让想模仿斯诺登的人反思。

June 23, 2013 at 5:40 PMIt can sometmes get fairly hot where I live; low forties by most the world's reconning, 100+ American style. However, it is dry, there is always a sea breeze in the evening that cools things off, and it only happens a few times a year, if that. So, when it happens we open the windows at night, and close them first thing in the morning. That way indoors will remain tollerable until mid-afternoon. Then we only have a few hours of unpleasant heat until the sea breeze comes.
Both most of China and the Eastern US are comparatively unpleasant to visit in summer, for me, because of the high humidity and heat that persists at night.

A more direct translation might be:
Our boss is very fierce, and no one dares to speak with with him.
Or I could run with the bait:
Our boss is like a large predatory animal, one wrong move and you're dinner. So, no one dares to speak with him.
