This Uppper 'Funny Business' series of Laowang was to be my opus - I had originally wanted Laowang to spiral further down the path of self-destruction and evil into the complex Chinese underworld - to then rise in power and then send his henchmen after Bill for revenge - Laowang would then be so struck with guilt as he watched Bill's life seep from his body that he would repent and make ammends to his wife and society by becoming a philanthropist and ratting out his previous criminal brothers - only to get double crossed by a bent cop.

But I guess this was a great ending too - probably more practical for Chinese learning purposes.

Posted on: Express Train or High-speed Train?

When you get the 1st class seats on the D train, you can plug in your laptop/notebook computers. The older ones only have power outlets at the front, middle and back of each carriage, but the new ones have 1 outlet for every four seats - you can always pack an extension cord with multiple outlets if you have pressing business and need to share  :)

I know that 1st classseats form Shanghai to Suzhou are only 5 kuai more expensive than 2nd class (16%) but I hear there is no standard of price difference so it will vary.

Bodawei we 'atheists' and/or academics prefer to call it BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era).

I think due to the fact that all(almost) CPod content produced since its inception is available and the discussions are still open, segregating ourselves into groups of 'Old school' and 'new school' poddies is in fact counter-productive. We are Poddies, we have a common goal - to learn Chinese. I signed up today so I am new school, to the lady who signs up next week I am old school.

Let us not digress too far from the fact the Dear Amber was a great show.

贱货 jiàn huò can be used to mean slut/bitch and is highly offensive - try NOT to use it. Also in my experience women are more likely to say 贱 than men. Its quite bitchy and 'unmanly' to use this word - in Anhui at least.

Listening to higher level dialogues for that extra immersion (you get that floating feeling when it's over your head) is a really good way to get accustomed to hearing Chinese. Try reading out loud after clicking on the audio buttons next to the dialogue and vocab sentences. Seriously it will come quicker than you think. When I started out I'd play the first 2-3 tapes in my kit over and over and over and over - even when I went to bed and got up in the middle of the night - after a few months I was pronouncing Chinese just like they did on the tapes.

Do the same with cpod dialogues and the slower clips and it will work. Maybe even mix your own gigantic mp3 file form CPod materials for this purpose.

Jewish holidays was a lesson topic requested by a CPod user a few months back - since this is the first major holiday since then I'd like to dedicate this lesson to him.

I received a PM from @Zhenlijiang who was deeply offended by some 'rather horrendous Japanese slang' posted by @themainman - she asked me to remove it. I had it checked (by a Japanese friend) and yes, it was horrible, and completely uncalled for. So I removed the offending comment and Zhen's reply - as requested.

With the translation tools at our disposal in this day and age 'vulgar language' can be translated with ease regardless of what language it is written in.

Need I explain further?
