malilaoshi - I may have misunderstood what you were looking for... did you want it to have English subtitles? If so I don't now if you will find 你是我兄弟 in English subtitles. The DVD's I'm watching have no English subtitles (bought in Shanghai).

malilaoshi: I'm currently watching "你是我兄弟" (You are My Brother). It is a mainland China series, for sure no Taiwanese accent here.

brendaninaus, Yes, you're right. Sometime in the 70's Taiwan did not compete in the Olympic games because the other countries decided to only recognize one China and Taiwan refused to compete under a new name given to them that recognized them as a part of China. Shortly after that boycott they gave in and have ever since (*i think) participated in the Olympics being officially recognized as a part of China.

Also around that timeframe I believe that Taiwan officially lost it's seat as being recognized by the United Nations as the United Nations began to only recognize the mainland's governmet.

In Peter Hessler's book "Oracle Bones" he talks some about the history of this world shift to China instead of Taiwan and mentions that his opinion is that the Taiwan government was the one government in history who got screwed over more than anyone for not doing anything wrong. I'm not a history buff, so I don't have much of an opionion on this, just recalling a Peter Hessler book.

I just asked my girlfriend (who is mainland Chinese) what she thinks of Taiwan. Like all Chinese people I've ever met, she is insistent that Taiwan is absolutely a part of China. She said that from the time Chinese children were very young, in school they are taught this.

When I asked her about the two different political systems, she said it's like having a child. That child's mother is of catholic religous belief and the father buddhist. And the child ended up moving away with the father and studied buddhism with him. When the child comes back home, the child is not Catholic, but it is still the mothers child. She said that Taiwan is the same as in the child of China.

She also went on to say that due to America supporting Tawian; this is the only reason Taiwan ever wants to say they want to be alone and not a part of China. If not for the American's supporting them, then Taiwan would want to come back under a communist regime and would not talk about separation... PS - I'm American, but this does not stop her (or many other Chinese people I've met) to voice the "bad" things they believe America does to upset China. :)

Just out of curiosity, which Chinese Pod Cast will you be switching to? I honestly have not found one as good as Chinese Pod.

I guess everyone has their own learning methods, but I place more emphasis on the content rather than the speaker... when I started my new round of Chinese lessons I was rotating teachers on a weekly basis to have mix of "pronunciation", but I soon content trumped any pronunciation card... I also realize my situation may be different as I live in China and daily hear different pronunciation, if living abroad, I definitely think it is more important to have a mix of teachers..... C-Pod hopefully understands their customer base to give their most $$$ grossing customers what they want.... if that majority are over-sea's they should adhere. :)
