November 7, 2008 at 2:24 PMThis dialogue had a whole load of truth in it, not only in terms of internet addiction and the overprotective mum, but also how much more in tune mothers are to their children's activities than dads are (Dads, don't get defensive; in most cases this is true). Actually come to think of it, the dad here probably is itching to go online to play games too, except that he doesn't really dare to do so under wifey's watchful eye. I limit my çhildren's time on the computer (while I still can!) and they know we will never buy Xbox, Nintendos, PSPs, etc, for them. Their friends think they're really unlucky!

November 6, 2008 at 9:40 AMI prefer visitors to my home to remove their shoes but I feel embarassed to ask them to do it, especially since it isn't the usual thing to do here in the UK. I cringe when they step in after I've just vacuumed, and when I do ask them to take their shoes off - those winter boots and laced-up shoes take such a long time to remove - I feel quite guilty.

Chinese people have an indirect way of finding out one's age; that is by asking which animal sign one is born under...works all the time, unless someone is heavily Botoxed or just happens to look really worn for his age.

Jenny's 不爽 sounds quite close to the essence of grumpy, being "not cheerful". I will file that in my head.

October 24, 2008 at 1:02 PMReading this thread has really got me curious and I'm thinking really hard for a suitable word to mean "grumpy". I am, however, limited by my level of written Chinese. In Cantonese, we have described a surly, unapproachable demeanour as "fu hei" and I am quite sure the second word is 气 qì, but can't figure out what the first one might be in Mandarin. Perhaps changye or someone with similarly endless resources can help?

The tone of the 'fu' in 'fu hei' is about the same tone as the 'fu' meaning 'trousers' when spoken in Cantonese. No such tone in Mandarin but I don't know which number tone it is in Cantonese.
