fēi jī lǐ zuò zài wǒ páng biān shì yī gè yǒu diǎnr jǐn zhāng dė rén。 tā dė xíng li xiāng fàng zài xī bù shàng。 dǎ kāi dė shí hou, kàn dào lǐ miàn zhuāng mǎn shì yuè nán zhǐ bì。 xià dào wǒ! rán hòu, dào jī chǎng lė, wǒ jìu jiāo gěi hǎi guān yuán wǒ yǐ jīng tián xiě dė hǎi guān xíng shì。 tā kàn lė wǒ shuō yǒu zá zhì tā hěn bù kāi xīn dė shuō,“wèi shén mė nǐ zhè yàng tián xiě? gěi wǒ má fán! méi yǒu! méi yǒu!”tā jìu tu qù wǒ xiě dė dōng xi。 wǒ zhù zài yī jiān fǎ guó fēng gé dė jǐu diàn。 yòu gāo jí yòu piào liàng! wài miàn wán quán bù tóng, hái méi shén mė fā zhǎn。 xiàn zài yī dìng bù yī yàng lė! zǒng zhī, shì yī gè hǎo jīng lì! hé nèi shì hěn yǒu gǎn jué。 bù dàn níu ròu fěn hǎo chī ér qiě jí róu fěn yě hěn hǎo chī!
Posted on: Language Power Struggle
September 9, 2008 at 12:00 PMPrior to this lesson, I had seldom thought about these kinds of exchanges as language power struggles, rather I always thought it was down to my own inadequacies in the practice language, be it French or Chinese. You see, when I speak French and francophones reply in English, I always think it is because they find it too painful to carry on a conversation with me in French. I imagine they must find that I speak haltingly, with limited vocabulary and poor accent. Maybe it limits the scope in which they can express themselves for fear I won't understand the higher level language. I imagine the same thing when I speak Chinese, although I must say my 老师 is ever patient with me and humours me by carrying on in Chinese as if I were quite fluent, even when we are not in the classroom. I hope she forgives me for the gaffes I make, as often things must come out not quite the way I intend. Anyway, from now on, I shall try to remember this battle for the right to practise, and hope it will give me more confidence to speak in the languages I'm learning.

September 8, 2008 at 4:29 PMHey, did anybody notice the 吵架 was in Cantonese? I always thought Cantonese, even spoken normally, sounded like people having an argument. Must be frightening to people listening and not understanding. Funny too.

September 6, 2008 at 8:19 PM哈哈!

September 2, 2008 at 9:00 PMEveryone in my circle, in fact everyone I know, refers to 老婆 and 老公,and there is nothing to hint of disrespect at all. In fact, it gives a feeling of familiarity and comfort. I have only ever heard 太太 being used in formal situations, by people I don't already know, and by 老外. I sometimes refer to my 老公 as 我先生.
