May 26, 2009 at 5:12 AMPete, that dismissive *秋* you mentioned is used a lot here in Singapore and Malaysia. We spell it as "cheh!". There is even a draggy version of it when the feeling you want to convey is akin to "What's the big deal?" or "Tell me something I don't know". It goes, "chayyyy..."

May 18, 2009 at 7:57 AM哇！这课程好着呢！Did I use that 着呢 correctly? In the supplementary vocab, there is a 吃软饭 I've heard my parents use 吃拖鞋饭 to mean the roughly the same thing, i.e. to depend on the wife instead of eking out a living himself. Has anyone heard that before? Is it the same idea?

May 18, 2009 at 7:33 AMHere in Singapore, I often hear waiters say 小心烧的 when they're bringing hot food. When I buy soybean milk, I often get asked if I want it 烧还是冷的。Is using 烧 for hot food/drinks done in China or Taiwan too?

May 14, 2009 at 3:04 AMbrandonweaver3, interesting bit about 断背。I understand what you mean about it being a curse word, even if one doesn't have any personal prejudices against gay people. Truth is in conservative Chinese society, homosexuality is still viewed very much in a negative light, unlike in the UK, where it's against the law to express or even hint of any biased feeling toward 同性。
