April 21, 2009 at 4:51 AM@kien, I love Bak Kut Teh, particularly the Teochew style one which is clear, pale, and very peppery. I love the soup garnished with lots of coriander and eat the meat dipped in dark caramel soy with sliced red chillies. When we were living in the middle east and in the UK, we made our own, using packets of pre-mixed spice bought during visits home to Singapore. For the benefit of non-Hokkien speaking poddies, it is translated as 肉骨茶 ròugǔchá.

April 21, 2009 at 4:19 AMNot all Chinese people use chopsticks "correctly". The correct technique must be learnt in childhood or one will tend to stïck with the "wrong" way forever. It really depends on the willpower to correct a wrong technique. My husband was never taught the right way as a kid, so holds them lacking efficiency till today and I think old habits die hard. My daughter and I both had the willpower to correct ourselves at about age 9-10 and so we use them well and effortlessly, but my son at the age of 10 now, can't really be bothered to correct his hold as he can manage basic picking up of noodles and food morsels (it's tiring trying to hold them correctly at first), but he lacks the finer control my daughter and I have.

April 21, 2009 at 1:31 AMIn Asian homes, it is the norm to take off one's shoes. It is expected and the host would really be aghast if someone entered without first removing his or her footwear. Now that I have moved back, I am so relieved I don't have to tell my guests to take their shoes off anymore as everyone does it automatically. In the UK, I was the one feeling 不好意思 asking people to 脱鞋。

My kids are not as small as the one in the dialogue but they have been saying they miss their dad a lot as we are in Singapore and he is still in the UK. It'll be another few weeks before we can be together again.

March 6, 2009 at 12:19 AMThis comment comes a bit late, but like some other poddies who have already posted theirs, I found this particular QW puzzling, and I must say, rather annoying. To deliberately withhold the one word that would have completed the lesson seems out of character for the team that usually delivers well thought out lessons. At the very least, it could have been consciously included in the comments with a suggestion in the broadcast to visit the comments page for the answer. Thank you, Light487 for coming to the rescue.

March 2, 2009 at 11:22 PMWow, it sure took me a while to scroll through all the comments. It was a great lesson and again, timely. I've just moved back to Singapore from the UK and am doing lesson catchup now, and I went for a 体检 just yesterday. I'm supposed to submit a stool sample today (how do you say that?) but I'm still waiting for nature's signal. Also scheduled for a mammogram (照胸???)

我认为我做的 chilli con carne 不错，可是我想肯定不太 authentic. The accompaniments I make to go with it are very clichéd as well - guacamolé and 沙沙将。哈哈！

April 21, 2009 at 5:34 AMI'm surprised nobody mentioned the rural outhouses where toilets are a hole on raised platform with a large bucket placed on the ground under it. All waste goes into it. When I was a small child, my grandfather's house still used this bucket system, and it was a very scary experience for me. I feared falling through the hole and especially dreaded visiting the outhouse at night, when one needed to use a torch. It was inadvisable to look down...euks!
