At first, it totally seemed nonsensical to use "xia" in the line, 'putong wu shen tiao xia shui'. I guess using xia only makes sense if you were going with the meaning, "to go down" which would imply, "going down into the water".

But wouldn't it be better/more logical/more consistent with other meanings to say "shang shui"? The same shang as in shang che, to go into a taxi. This may be an area where as John might say, Chinese isn't as well behaved as it could be. I'm probably just thinking out loud on this.

so when you go into the eye doctor's office, do you ask for a prescription? Do you actually say the Chinese word for prescription?

I heard a lot of drinking games in Lanzhou, but I never heard this one. Or maybe this is a bar drinking game, and the restaurants where I heard drinking games did not do this game. Interesting. Maybe this is a Shanghai thing?

Good to have wikipedia. I've heard about the I Ching, but really didn't know much about it. Interesting stuff.

And by the way, the new style changes are the ones adding the forward slash to my comments above.

lamartiniere, best of luck to you. Sounds like you're one of the lucky ones.

There is an earthquake related lesson, but it's at an advanced level. I agree that natural disasters like the Haiti and Chengdu earthquakes could benefit from an intermediate level lesson.

This could also benefit from being a lower level lesson as well.

In addition to this advanced lesson, this lesson should also be offered at the intermediate level as well. Plus, cpod can talk about the NBA preseason games hosted in China, and the fact that the games are as expensive in Beijing as they are in LA, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia etc... (if that wasn't the subject of the lesson before. I wouldn't know; 130 character vocabulary and all...)

I assume the measure word for chōngzhíká is "ge"?.

I want to say, "Wǒ yào mǎi yī ge yīdòng de chōngzhíkǎ. Yī bái kuài qián".

Or can I just say, "Wǒ yào mǎi yīdòng de chōngzhíkǎ"?

I left the country with my Lanzhou SIM card in 2006, and was still able to use the same number in 2009. So I guess the answer to how long does a China Mobile Sim Card number last is at least 3 years (assuming the rules haven't changed as I write this).

I think I had 100 RMB on the card when I left China, and then it was more than a year later when I returned to China. I was still able to make calls.
