At least in Beijing, I haven't seen/heard much big band of any era. There does seem to be a jazz scene in Beijing where passions for sax can occasionally be indulged :-)

Overall, I'm in agreement with what's being said. Much of the time things that are said to me, I understand 20-40% or so. If the first thing that someone says to me is "chūmén shì jì de guān kōng tiáo" (when leaving the room, remember to turn off the air conditioning), I probably wouldn't understand for another year or so. Right now, I'm in the "context sensitive" phase.

If I had only known the saxophone was cool (or at least cooler than the clarinet), I might have picked that :-) but after all these years, I now realize I don't like to have to constantly blow into things!

I do remember band in the 5th grade, and the process for assigning musical instruments was somewhat as described in this lesson; here are the instruments, pick the one you like, start playing.  I didn't like any of them (at first), and was assigned the clarinet because the band teacher needed another one.

I noticed that you didn't put this topic in the lesson topic suggestion thread. well, i've heard of man-boobs, but that was more guys who should wear bras, not because they actually did :-)

And I thought the US was interesting....
