I once met a guy that had his girlfriend's name tattooed onto his neck in Chinese characters.  He seemed amazed that my wife actually could read the Chinese.  We then asked if he was still with the girl, and then he said, no, she was no longer his girlfriend.

Oh, jomini99, you might try this link also. It seems to give helpful background and screenshots for the download process.

Well, I didn't ask what programs you could see or not see hanzi in, and I'm not the Microsoft Windows expert, but you might want to try the following downloads. At some point, I think I downloaded a few of these, and IE 8, Office 2007 can deal with hanzi. You might need a set of drivers in the OS (I also didn't ask if you were using 7, XP or Vista), so if that's not here, then search the Microsoft website for the appropriate drivers. (I also assume that you have a legal copy of 7, XP or Vista). Good luck.

Guo2mei3 is not as good as Best Buy in the US, but it gets the job done for consumer electronics in China (assuming you're not an Apple apostle).

The differences between Windows 7 Starter and the other versions are big enough for me to want to get 7 Professional. But that's because I want to do things like run Virtual PC on the machine, and network the machine to other machines.

Not sure that I can help either, but I at least want to understand your problem. By reinstalled, it appears that you mean that you had an english version of Windows on your machine, and then some dude off the street gave you the Chinese version. Is that correct? Also, are you in China? If so, what city?

well, certainly netbook prices are relatively low, but then they also tend to have Windows 7 Starter on them. I guess I should just go to Guóměidiànqī (is that the right pinyin for the electronics store chain?) and ask, but but I thought I would ask here and save the embarrasment for later. Plus I need to figure out how to say Windows 7 Ultimate/Professional/Home, and the "English version".

Just curious if anyone knows what a legal version of Windows 7 Home would cost in China. I see plenty of laptops around costing 6000-11000RMB, so i'm unclear why the OS cost is such an issue if the hardware cost is high in the first place.
