bababardwan, I don't think the Chinese street food is too poisonous. I ate something dubious in Beijing, but I still don't know if it was street food that made me ill or restaurant food. However, everything else was fine (and really 方便). Plus, if you're put on antibiotics, then it gives you license to eat whatever you want, right? (Later I was told this was not the case - there could be parasites. Guess I was lucky!)

Ah, scary-looking sausage on a stick, I had forgotten about that.

bababardwan, two different hills! Though in all honesty, I think the Aussies would win in a straight sprint up the hill. The Chinese people looked like they were gonna have a heart attack, whereas the Aussies did it for fun (though at the top after the Aussies had sprinted around the summit 3 times, I did see some guy practically collapse into a water fountain).

My legs almost fell off when I walked up Huangshan. But at least I didn't look like I was gonna die like the Chinese people that were practically sprinting to the top. I didn't understand why they were in such a rush. (I have decided that Aussies have a disturbingly masochistic streak when it comes to sprinting up steps - I was practically collapsing up another hill when all these Aussies sprint past going "ooh, I love steps, they're wonderful for my bum")

Hmm, the rise of cosmetic surgery all over is probably as much to do with a rise in income as it is with marketing executives. I don't see any less obsession with beauty in the East as there is in the West. India, China, Singapore - they all advertise skin-whitening creams and all sorts of beauty products, and an image of ideal beauty in all the media.

The egg-flavoured one is the best!

I like the old jingle. Obviously a rare species round here.

Light487, I know a guy that went out to teach with absolutely no Mandarin skills whatsoever (and no teaching skills either - where he is, they gave him about 3 hours of training and shoved him into the classroom. Not quite sure how that works out for the kids, but hey). He does have a degree though.

I heard that you could get teaching work without a degree if you had sufficient experience. I have another friend that did a TESOL course for a month and then was given a short-term teaching contract in London. From what I gather, that'll also do in some places.

(Don't take my word for it, it's just what I've heard).

I walked up and down Hollywood Boulevard about 6 times trying to work out where the Hollywood sign was. What's with all the dodgy shops selling bongs and porn at the other end of the street? Wasn't expecting that!

I have to admit, we saw Peets coffee, and we thought the owner didn't know how to spell. Didn't try it - did I miss out?
